Cabbie arrested for ‘stealing’ John Legend’s luggage at JFK Airport after the Grammy-winning singer landed at JFK Airport on Thursday, law enforcement sources told The Post.
The $5,000 black Louis Vuitton bag was left unattended on a SmarteCart at Terminal 4 — allowing Augustin Hilario to allegedly pick it up and run off undetected, sources said. Legend had just arrived in New York from France. The bag contained $25,000 Cartier Panther cuff links with clear and green stones, a $500 pair of sunglasses and $500 worth of clothing, sources said.
Legend and his camp noticed the bag was missing once he arrived at his hotel and called Delta Airlines and Port Authority police, sources said. PA detectives reviewed surveillance video from the terminal and saw Hilario, who is known to them, picking up the “Ordinary People” singer’s bag and walking away.
The 63-year-old driver is charged with grand larceny, attempted grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.
He’s awaiting arraignment in Queens criminal court and faces up to seven years in jail if convicted.
Hilario, of Corona, Queens, allegedly told cops he planned to take the bag to the airport’s lost and found.
“I know I should not have taken it. I made a mistake,” he told them.
Cops were supposed to return the bag and all of its contents to Legend on Friday.
Legend, who’s married to model Chrissy Teigen, took to Twitter to dispel rumors that he was robbed by his own livery cab driver.
“This story is untrue. We use a trusted car service and they did not rob me,” he wrote. “Our Delta greeter made a mistake and left a bag on the cart.”
The dad of one further explained, “The bag was taken because it was left unattended. The airport police caught the person who took it (on video) and retrieved my bag. Thanks to the airport police/security. One could say it’s been ‘handled.'”
